珍味 Delicacies

今回ご紹介する珍味は、私が幼少の頃に食べていた物です。とっても美味しかったですよー。今でも私の育った地方では食べられていますが、昔ほどではありません。

The followings are the delicacies I used to eat when I was a little kid.  They were delicious!  The people who live in the area where I grew up still eat them, but not as often.

こちらはいなご。秋には田んぼで沢山イナゴを捕まえたのもです。。そしたら母が料理してくれました。
Those are crickets.  I used to catch them in the rice patties in autumn, then my mom cooked them for us.

 こちらの写真は、姪っ子が最近彼女のブログに載せていたもの。どうやら、彼女達も最近食べたらしいです。
Those photos were taken from my niece's blog.  They seemed to eat them not too long ago.

こちらは蚕のさなぎ。 昔祖母が収入を得る為に蚕を飼っていました。もちろん、繭を取る為です。料理用のさなぎの為ではありません。で。。時折母か祖母がさなぎの佃煮を作ってくれたのでしょう。。。で、私達はごく当たり前にそれを食べていました。美味しかったですよ〜！
Those are silkworm pupae.  My grandma used to grow silkworms to earn income.  Of course, she grew silkworms to get silk, not for getting pupae to cook.  But occasionally, my mom or grandma cooked those, so I ate them without any hesitation.  They were delicious!

最後のこちらは蜂の子。子供の頃これをとる為に蜂の巣を探したものです。そしたら、母が蜂の子ご飯を作ってくれました。美味しかったなー！たいてい、これら、イナゴ、蚕のさなぎ、蜂の子は甘ーい醤油味に調理されてました。
Lastly, here is bee larvae.  I used to look for bee hives to get those.  My mom cooked those with rice and they were delicious.  Usually, all of those things, crickets, silkworms, and bee larvae were cooked in sugary soy sauce.

今見ると、どれも結構どぎつい感じですよね。。。食べるには。。。
Now when I look at those, they do look pretty unusual as food to eat....

またまた。。。 Again...

今日もゴーヤ情報です。現在最初についたゴーヤはこんなサイズになっています。可愛いでしょー！何れ位のサイズになったら食べようかなー。考えてみたら、毎日沢山ゴーヤがとれても、食べきれないので、今の感じ。。ちょっとずつで良いですね。
Today is about bitter melon again.  Now, the first bitter melon is growing into this size.  Aren't they cute!  I don't know when or what size is the best time to harvest and eat.  And I was just thinking, it's good that I don't have too much bitter melons growing at a time, because I don't think we can eat so much of them every day.

知ってましたか？Did you know?

これらはどちらもゴーヤの花です。でも、ちょっと違いがわかりますか？実は片方が雄花で片方が雌花なんだそうです。私も知らなかったのでネットで調べてみました。さて、どちらが雌花でしょう？答えは、瓜のついている方です。で、咲いている花を見てみたら、ほとんどが雄花。あらまー！それじゃあ我が家ではゴーヤがあまり実らないじゃあないですか！と、よく調べてみたら、どうやら我が家だけではないらしく、そもそも、雄花２０に対して、雌花１位の割合らしいです。なるほど、面白いですね。

Those are bitter melon flowers.  Do you notice the difference?  One is male and the other is female.  I didn't know, so I searched and learned it from internet.  Can you guess which one is female?  The answer is the one with tiny melon.  So I looked at all the flowers and realized most of my flowers are male flowers!!!  Oh, no!!  That means I will not have so much bitter melon!  Then, I went online again and learned that it's not just mine.  I learned that the ratio of male to female is about 20 to 1.   Hmmm...interesting....

トマト！Tomato!

ポットで 種から始めたトマトがやっとここまで成長したので、畑に移しました。
The tomato which I started from seed in a pot finally has grown to this size, so I transferred them to my garden.

カタツムリからトマトを守る為に、夜の間はこうしてポットをかぶせておきます。
I covered tomatoes with those pots to protect them from snails during the night.

今晩のおかず Tonight's dinner

 こちらは、さつまいもの葉っぱ。雨が降って綺麗に葉が洗われていたので収穫する事にしました。
This is sweet potato leaves.  The heavy rain today washed the leaves so clean and I thought this is the best time to harvest.

大きなボールに一杯の葉っぱが集りました。

 I got a big bowl full of leaves.

 油とニンニクでさっと炒めたら、こんなにちょっとに。
I stir-fried them with oil and garlic.  Then, it's only this much now..

こちらは今晩のおかず。左から、さつまいもの葉っぱ炒め。きのことたまねぎと人参のターメリック（ウコン）味炒め。もやしと海藻サラダ。蒸しさつまいも。焼き鮭。子供たちがお野菜が多すぎるって、ブーブー。

This is what we had for dinner tonight.  From left.. sweet potato leaves.  Turmeric flavored mushroom, onion and carrot.  Bean sprout, seaweed salad. Grilled salmon.  Sweet potato. Served with rice.   Kids complained about having too much vegetable.

 香港から帰ってきましたー。月曜日は洗濯をたーくさんしました。こちらケビンの制服シャツ。白いシャツを白くてシミなしに保つのはすごく大変！漂白剤をいつもいつも使いたくないし。
We are back from Hong Kong.  I did loads of laundry on Monday.  This is Kevin's uniform shirt.  It's so hard to keep it white with no stain. And I don't want to use bleach so often...

Akko Chan and Birthday.

This is a movie ticket.  It has my name, Akko Chan on it, right?! That's the title of the movie we watched yesterday.

I am grateful that I am blessed with wonderful family! Joshua is missing from this photo!!  We miss you!
