丑年 Year of Cow

３、４年前に始めたこのクロスステッチを昨日やっと完成させました．まあ来年は（アメリカはまだ１２月３１日）丑年だしちょうどいいということで。でも麻の布にクロスステッチはもう絶対しませんというより出来ません．老眼には細かすぎ．
I just finished this cross-stitch. I started this probably 3 or 4 years ago. Just in time for the year of COW. I am not doing any more cross-stitches on linen.

こちらは、おそらく１０年以上前に始めたもの．今度はこれに取りかかるつもり．２００９年には完成するかな？？？
I started this one probably over 10 years ago. I am going to work on this one next. Hopefully, I can finish this in 2009!!

クラシックカー Classic Car

アリゾナにこの1974 Chevy Laguna S-3をまだおいてあるんです．すごくカッコイイ車なんだけどとにかくガソリン消費量がすごい！私たちがアジアに駐在中の７年間、倉庫においてありました。もう一度乗り回したいけど、効率的じゃあないし、カリフォルニアに持ってくるのも大変．手放したくないんだけど、ただいま売りに出してます．（リンクのサイトの車は我が家のとそっくりですが、他人のものです．）
We have this 1974 Chevy Laguna S-3 in Arizona. It is a really nice car, but its appetite for the gasoline is just so big. We left this car in the storage for seven years while we were in Asia. I wished to drive this car again, but it's not practical and we don't want to bring it to California. Anybody wants to buy? It's for sale now. (linked site is not ours, but the car looks just like ours.)

雪だるま Snowman

雪のないところで雪だるまを作るのは大変だけれど、これはとても簡単に出来ちゃう雪だるま。まずは男物のフリーサイズの靴下の３分の１の部分にお米を入れて、ひもで縛る。これをもう２回繰り返して、身体が出来上がり。最後の縛ったところに、赤ちゃん用の靴下を何回か折り返したものを帽子代わりにかぶせて、後は自分で好きなように顔を書いたり、鼻をつけたりボタンを付けたり。可愛い雪だるまの出来上がり．
It's difficult to make a snowman in the place with no snow. But, this snowman is very easy and no need for snow. First, you need a big tube sock and stuff 1/3 of sock with rice and tie with string. Repeat it twice and the body is done. You roll a baby sock few times and cover the end of the sock and make it look like a hat or a bucket for the snowman. The rest of the parts, you can do as you like. You can draw eyes, mouth, put some buttons and etc. The cute snowman is done even before the snow starts to melt away. Oh, we got no snow!

毎年１２月に撮る家族写真。男の子に自然な笑顔を頼むのは難しい。特にティーンエイジャーには。。
ところがなんと、今年のクリスマスの家族写真はとても笑顔が素敵だと思いませんか？それもこれも、皆が真剣に笑顔を作ろうとしている時に、よしあが我慢できずにした大きなくしゃみのお陰。
We take family photo in early December every year. It's a difficult task for the boys to give natural smile for the photos, especially to the teenagers. But this year, the photo tuned out to be a really good one with beautiful smiles. Agree? Thanks to JOSHUA, he couldn't hold the sneeze in the middle of the serious photo shooting session.

雪 Snow

このところよく雨が降る．朝には温度が零度近くまで下がることがあって、先日は霜が降りていた．遠くの方の山は雪景色がとてもきれい．信州の山の景色を思い出すなぁ。
The weather hasn't been so good. The temperature goes down to 36F sometimes in the morning. We had some frost last week. I love this view from our community. The beautiful snow covered mountains! It reminds me of my home town, Nagano.

ハート Hearts

今晩テレビで映画を見た。ちょっとくだらない映画で、見ながらの暇つぶしにハートを編んだ。なかなか可愛いかな．
I watched a movie on TV tonight. It was OK, but I got bored after a while. So, I crocheted hearts. So cute!

ねこ CAT

見て．ねこがねこをかぶってるよ。いや猫なんてかぶってないよ、どっちかって言うと不機嫌そうだよ。作りかけの猫の頭をかぶらされてフキゲンそうなねこ。。。今日は英訳無理だぁ！！
つまらないだじゃれ。。。
"Brown" is not happy because he was forced to wear an unfinished cat's head. I understand how you feel, poor cat.

寒い！！ COLD!!

寒いよ〜〜．過去２年、常に暖かいシンガポールに住んでいた私。アメリカの中でもいつも天気の素晴らしい南カリフォルニアとはいえ。。１２度の気候は寒い！！ずっと着ていなかった冬物の洋服をだして、あれこれと重ね着．どうかしら？昨日これを着ていたら。。ホームレスに見えると言われた！！確かにアメリカの経済は今最悪だけど．．．私は感謝なことに暖かい家に住まわせてもらっています．
It's so COLD. I'd lived in Singapore past two years and it was ALWAYS warm. The weather here in Southern California is really nice compare to the rest of the US. But coming back from Singapore, this 12C/53F weather is COLD!! So, I took out my winter cloth. Ta da... Do I look homeless??? That's the comment I got with this outfit. Yes, economy here is really bad, but thank God I am living in a house and staying warm.

ポットホルダー Pot Holders

できました。友達に教わったポットホルダー。すごく簡単ですが、可愛くし上がります。。。先生ご教授ありがとう。
I finished the Pot Holder. Yeah!! I followed my friend's tutorial. It's so easy and finishing is so cute. Thank you, teacher!!

ティーコーゼー Tea cozy

超久しぶりにミシンで手作り。本当は友達の教えに従って、ポットホルダーを作るつもりだったんだけど、こちらのお友達が教えてもらいながら一緒に作りたいというので、明日に先延ばし。でもせっかくミシンを出したし、何かを作ろうと思って、前から欲しかったティーコーゼーを作りました．オリジナルデザインで〜す。フエルトを使ったので簡単。さあ、お紅茶でもいれよぉ！！
I haven't used sewing machine for a while. I was going to make the pot holder my dear friend taught me. Then, another friend said she wants to make it together, so the making of pot holder is postponed to tomorrow. Since I set up the sewing machine and all other stuff, I decided to make a tea cozy that I wanted. This is my original design. Using the felts made the work easier. Now make some tea and enjoy.


新しいミシンは色んなステッチが出来るので、楽しいで〜す。

キルト Quilt

アリゾナの倉庫においてあった箱のひとつで、クリスマス用品と書かれた箱を久しぶりに開けてみました．懐かしいクリスマスの飾り物が出てきました．その中の一つが、クリスマスツリーの下をカバーするツリースカート。ヨシアがお腹にいた頃、私が友達と一緒にキルトを楽しんでいた頃の作品です。ミシンでピーシングをして、手でキルトをしました。我が家ではまだクリスマスツリーを出していないので、ちょっとポンチョとして着用してみようかな？？？なんて。。。
I opened one of the boxes that came from the storage in Arizona. On the box it was written "Christmas decorations." The decorations inside, each had its memories and brought me back to those days when children were still cute little babies. One of them is this quilted tree skirt. When I was pregnant with Joshua, I used to get together with friends and quilt. This one is machine pieced and hand quilted. I haven't put out our Christmas tree in the house yet, so for now wearing it as a poncho

観察力 Observation

先日ワイシャツを２２枚アイロンして色分けしてみました。主人が家に帰った時にかなり感動するだろうと思っていたら。。。あてがあずれました。
「シャツ見た？」「あ、ありがとう」「何か気がつかなかった？」「え？なに？」
あ〜あ、だめだこりゃ。。。彼は色音痴？こんなことどうでもいいんだよね。。お店に来たかのようにきれいだと思ったんだけどな。。。まあいいや、きれいに色分けしてクローゼットにかけるの結構楽しかったしさ。。
あなただったら気がついてたと思う？

I ironed 22 shirts the other day and sorted them out by color. I was pretty sure that my husband will come home and be impressed by the way arranged the shirts in the closet. BUT, it went not noticed.
"Did you see the shirts?" "Yeah, thank you for ironing them." "Did you notice something else?" "What?"
Ah... Is he color blinded?? Well it's OK, I enjoyed the time arranging the shirts. So, who cares he didn't notice it....

第二外国語 Second language

ケビンがひらがなの勉強を始めた。来年の夏に日本へ行くまでにマスターしなければ、日本行きの切符をもらえないという約束で。
Kevin has started studying Hiragana(Japanese alphabet.) If he doesn't master reading and writing Hairagana by next summer, he won't get the air ticket to go back to Japan. He'd better work hard!

柔軟性 Flexibility

こちらに越してきてしばらくした頃、ストレッチを始めました。始めた頃はこれくらいしか曲げられませんでした。
I started stretching exercises a while ago after I moved here. This is how I was when I started. I couldn't bend down any further.

今はここまで曲げられるようになりました。もう少ししたら床に手のひら全部がつくかも。これはすごい事なんです。私にとって。だってここ何年間もここまで曲げられなかったから。腰痛もあって。。続ければ必ずとの義妹の言葉に励まされあきらめなかった結果なり。。継続は力。
This is how much I can bend down now. I can soon touch the floor with whole palm. This is incredible to me since I couldn't do this for many years partially due to my lower back problem. Practice makes (almost) perfect. Thanks to my sister-in-law for her encouraging advise.

コンサート Concert

いや〜〜。超久しぶりに、コンサートなどというものに行ってきた。何年ぶりだろう。しかも子供３人を家において、夫婦だけで。子供達も成長したものだ。自分たちでパスタをゆでて食べ。ちゃんと片付けもしてあった。今回はコンサートの音響の仕事をしているお友達からご招待でTrans Siberian Orchestraというグループのコンサートを見てきた。わお。クラッシック音楽も色んな表現の仕方があるものだ。。。伝統に捕われない自由な表現の仕方。なかなか気に入った。YouTubeビデオ。
We went to a concert last night. It's been such a long time. I don't remember when is the last one, especially one without kids. They are now old enough to stay home on their own. They cooked pasta for dinner. Kitchen was all clean. Great job! We went to see "Trans Siberian Orchestra." Wow. They were good. They express classical music in non traditional way. I really liked them and enjoyed the concert so much.Video on YouTube

朝食 Breakfast

今日の私の朝食。週末ファーマーズマーケットで買った、有機栽培のニンジン、セロリ、リンゴ、ビート。
My breakfast for this morning. Organic carrot, celery, apple and beet.

朝の一杯。昔私が小さい頃、母がよく野菜ジュースを作ってたよなぁ。。。
A glass of juice for this morning. I remember my mother used to make those juice when I was a kid.

昨日テメキュラで地震があった。それほど大きな揺れではなかったけれど、でも朝の４時半に揺れを感じて起きたから、すごく小さいというわけでもなかった。こちらに越してきて初めての地震。ちょっと怖かったよ。
Earthquake hit Temecula yesterday. It wasn't so big, but it was big enough to wake us up 4:30am in the morning. It was the first one felt since we moved here and we got a bit scared.

緑に塗られた庭。。 Painted green.

妙に緑な庭。先日まで茶色だった庭が少しずつ緑になってきたかと思ったら、急に全体が緑に。どうやら不動産の人が庭をスプレーペイントで緑に塗ったらしい。それもこれも少しでも家を早く売りたいという努力から？
Strangely green. This yard was brown for a long time, then it started to turn green couple weeks ago. Then, all the sudden it was all green. It seems that the realtor spray painted the whole front yard green in the effort of selling this house as quickly as possible?




週に何回か友達と近所を散歩するのが日課になっている。歩いていて気がつく事がある。それは、家の前の庭の変化。少しずつ芝の色が茶色くなってきたり、雑草の丈が高くなってきたかな？と思うと。。家の中が空になっていて、しばらくすると不動産の看板が立つ。我が家の近所を回っただけでもそんな家がいくつもある。厳しい時代だ。
I walk in the morning with my friend few times a week in our community. We notice couple things as we walk. The front yard lawn starts to turn brown, the weeds get taller. Then soon the house gets empty and a while later the notice is on the window. Then, the auction, open house or sale signs are up in the yards. I see quite few just in my neighborhood. Tough times.

とうとう Time has come.

その時がやってきた。ここ一年で老眼が随分進んだのを感じていたが。。。老眼鏡をかけるのは拒んでいた。しかし、この細かいクロスステッチをするのには老眼鏡なしでは限界に達した。夏に100円ショップで買った老眼鏡。なかなか使える。
I knew my presbyopia has been progressing, but I was still trying to manage without reading glasses. But the time has come. Since I started this cross stitch on linen, there is no way that I can do this work without the glasses. Now I wear this one which I bought in a dollar shop this summer. Wow, I can SEE!!

ケビンが夏に始めたクロスステッチのキーホルダーを昨日やっと完成させました。やったね！可愛いでしょ。今度は鳥のデザインのクロスステッチを始めます。少し始めたらまたブログしますね。
Kevin finally finished his cross stitch key chain he started this summer. Good job!! Isn't this cute! He is starting another cross stitch project. A bird design. We will post it once he gets started.

自然の色って本当に複雑で美し〜〜。
The colors in the nature are just so complex and beautiful.


自然のパターンて本当に複雑なような、シンプルなような、とにかく美しい。この葉っぱの数って一株に何枚なんだろう？どの株もも同じ数だけあると思う？誰か数えてくれるボランティアか暇人はいませんか？その辺のお子様〜〜。
The patterns in the nature seem so complex, but maybe so simple. They are beautiful. How many leaves do you think each section (each flower?) has? Do you think each of them has equal numbers of leaves?? Anybody want to volunteer to count? Any children there?

そっか、真ん中から新しい葉っぱが出続けて、外側から枯れてくんだから。。数えてられないね。。
Ah, the new leaves keep coming from the center and dying as it reaches the edge, Hard to count then...

実験中間報告 Experiment report

私が９月に始めた実験を覚えているでしょうか？あれから３ヶ月が過ぎました。これが今日撮れたての私の足。まあ多少皮膚の色に変化が？もしも私がもっと若かったらこの実験結果に変化があったでしょうか？こんな事に時間を費やす私を超暇人と思う。。。よね。。。はっはっは。。
Do you remember back in September, I started my experiment. That was 3 months ago. This is how my feet look today. The skin colors started to blend. Would this experiment have been different if I was younger??　You are thinking Akiko got too much time to spare that she uses time for such a stupid experiment... lol..

やっと出来た。 Finally finished.

なんと言うんでしょうかねぇ。。。私はいつも何かを作る作業をしたくなる。それで、あれこれ始めて、完成していないものが沢山あるんだけど。。。夕べこれを完成させました。携帯とi-Podが入っています。
Mmmmm, I always have this urge to create or make something. I start variety of things at different times and intend to finish.... I finished this one last night. This is for my cellphone and i-Pod.

近所の風景 View from our neighborhood.

ここのコミュニティーはモーガンヒルと言います。丘にそって家が建てられているので、眺めがいいです。
Our community is called Morgan Hill. It is build along and on the hill that provides nice views to the residents. Here are some pictures.

この辺は建築予定地。最近の不景気で家が売れず、新しい家が立つ予定はなかなかありません。。公園なども出来るはずなんだけど。。それにしても乾燥しているのがわかるでしょ？！山火事が起きる訳なんですよ。
Those are the lots for the new houses. Because of the slow economy, nobody is building new houses. You can see it's so brown..dry. Fire could start anytime if not careful.

この辺の家は全部新しい。丘の下の方にレストランやお店が沢山あります。
All the houses in this area are quite new. There are restaurants, grocery stores etc. at the bottom of the hill.

雨だ！！ Rain!!

え？雨が降った！！すごい！テメキュラに越してから初めて雨が降った。なんだかんだ３ヶ月雨を見ていなかったから、感動した。シンガポールから越してきた私にとって雨のない３ヶ月はちょっと妙で、本当に乾燥と静電気ショックの毎日だった。雨と言ってもにわか雨。すぐに乾いてしまいそうだけど嬉しい恵みの雨です。先日でた虹の写真もおまけに。。　この雨にはもう一つ裏話が。。。実は夕べすご〜〜く久しぶり（５、６年ぶり？）にイタリアにいる友達からメールが届いた。驚きと感動で、その友達に。。あまりにも珍しい事で明日の天気が心配だ。。。と冗談でメールを返信。。そして朝起きたらなんとこちらに越してから初めての雨。。。　冗談ではなかった。。。

Wow, it's raining!!! This is the FIRST rain we ever had since we moved to Temecula 3 months ago. I used to the rain in Singapore, it has been too long without rain and SO dry that I was suffering from electric shock in the house, off the car and in the stores. Though this is not quite rain, but more like shower... it truly is a blessing. I add a photo from few days ago, you see"RAINBOW!?"
There is more to this story. I received an e-mail from my dear friend in Italy last night. I haven't heard from her over 5,6 years, so I was so excited and happy. I replied to her right away and told her it was really a surprise and so unusual that it might change the weather tomorrow.... I was just kidding. BUT, the joke turned out to be true!!

新しいおもちゃ New toy..

庭に新しいおもちゃが増えました。。。バスケットのゴールです。自分たちで組み立てないといけなかったのですが、子供達が自分達で全部完成させました。偉い！良く出来ました。自宅の庭でバスケットをやって遊べるというのがすごく嬉しく、ご満悦な子供達。私も普段家の中でテレビを見たりゲームばかりしている子供達を見て怒ってばかりですが。。こうして元気に外で遊び運動している子供達を見ているとこちらもハッピーです。
We got a new toy in our backyard. It's a basketball hoop. It came in a box and needed to be assembled. The boys did it all by themselves. Great job!!! They are so excited and happy that they can play basketball in their own backyard. I am happy, too, to see the kids playing outside, getting more exercise than to see them playing video games or watching TV in the house.

鳥のえさ台 Bird feeder....

うちの庭には色んな鳥がやってきます。花の蜜を吸うハミングバードはとても可愛い。他の鳥も色がきれい。もっとたくさん見たいな〜〜と思って、鳥のえさ台を作って、玄米をおいてみました。２日目くらいに気がついたら玄米が完食されていました。それで、今度は普通のお米をまいてみました。なんと大きな鳥が。。。と思いきや。。。ウサギさんが台の上にのっかってお米を食べているじゃあありませんか。。。そういえば。。。玄米完食の台の上にウサギさんの大が落ちてたんだよねあの日。。。　ほんとは鳥さんに来てほしいのにな。。
We always have different birds visiting our garden. Humming birds are the cutest. Others are also colorful and pretty as well. I wanted to see more birds, so we made a bird feeder and put brown rice on it. After few days, I noticed all the brown rice was gone. So, I put regular white rice on it and waited. One morning, I saw a big bird on the feeder and I looked carefully to see what kind of bird it was..... it was a RABBIT kind!! The rabbit was on the feeder eating all the rice. Then I remembered that there was a dropping of a rabbit on an empty feeder. Ahh..... I want to attract BIRDS, not rabbits!!

Good News!! よいしらせ。

私の車の事故の件について。。。昨日、犯人が捕まった！！という知らせが警察から届いた。やった〜〜！！！って感じ。彼も車の保険に入っていたので、車の修理代などはその保険から出るという事で、一安心。良かった。お祈りありがとう！
We received a phone call from the police and the officer said the guy who drove away after crushing into my car got caught. Thank God the guy had the auto insurance, so his insurance should cover all the expenses. Thank you for your prayer.

旬なもの Very Seasonal

今日はとなりのとなり町ヘメットにある、日本で言う社会保険事務所へ出かけていった。用事を済ますだけで、なんの楽しい事もないと思っていたはずが。。。
見て！！とても旬なすごく可愛い風景でしょう！！見渡す限りカボチャ！！
I had to visit the Social Security office in Hemet, CA.
I didn't expect any fun on this trip, but look what I saw today. This field was filled with big and small pumpkins which was SO cute and seasonal.



この畑の向かいには小さなマーケットがあって、新鮮な野菜や果物、ジャム、パン、パイなどを売っていました。
Right next to this field was the small market. They had fresh vegetable, fruit, jams, bread and pies.

私はボイセンベリーアップルパイとグレープフルーツを買いました。
美味しかった！ 今日も恵みの多い一日だったな。
I bought a Boysenberry Apple Crumb Pie and some grapefruits.　
They were delicious! Today was another day filled with blessings.
