鍋 Hot Pot

こちらは先週晩ご飯に頂いた鍋料理です。白菜と豚肉のミルフィーユ鍋。制作過程は楽しくて簡単そして見た目も綺麗で味も良し。皆さんもお試しあれ。

We had Hot Pot dinner last week.  This is "Nappa cabbage and sliced pork millefeuille Hot Pot."  The process of making this dish was fun and easy.  And I think the dish looked pretty and tasted good.  Does anybody want to try?

 まずは白菜の葉っぱと薄切りの豚肉を交互に重ねていきます。そして切ったら綺麗に鍋の中に並べます。
First, I layered Nappa cabbage and sliced pork. Then, I cut them and put them nicely in a pot.

水をいれ、塩こしょうをして煮込み、醤油ダレで頂きました。
Then I added some water, seasoned with salt and pepper and cooked.  We ate with soy sauce based sauce.

射撃 Shooting

１２歳の子供が射撃場で銃を撃つ経験なんて日本で出来るのかな？ケビンもよしあも楽しんでやっていましたが、りきはボーリングの方が良いと言ってやりませんでした。

I don't know if 12 years old could experience shooting in a shooting range in Japan.  Kevin and Joshua enjoyed shooting, but Riki didn't want to do it.  He said he would rather go bowling.

チャン家のクリスマスディナー Chan family's Christmas dinner

チャン家はあまりこだわりがありません。それで、クリスマスディナーにも特にこだわりがありません。美味しかったら何でもオッケー。見てくださいこれらの品々。とっても美味しかったです〜〜！！！
The Chan family is not so picky about things.  And we are not so particular about what to eat for Christmas dinner.  If the food is good, it's good.  Please take a look of what we had.  They were all so delicious!!

 営養満点チキンスープ。Very nourishing chicken soup.

 ロブスタ〜！　Lobster!!

 羊肉とネギ炒め。Lamb meat cooked with Spring onion.

 香港風はまぐり Hong Kong style clam

　

 鶏肉、椎茸、中華ソーセージ煮

Chicken, black mushroom, Chinese sausage cooked in a clay pot.

 豆苗炒め Sauteed Tao Miao vegetable

さつまいもとタピオカのデザート

Sweet potato Tapioca dessert

完食！ No leftovers! 

追伸：ちなみにこれらはレストランで頂きました。私は作っていません。
PS:  We had those at a restaurant.  I didn't cook them. (^o^)

海釣り Ocean fishing

こちらが昨日釣った魚です。お父さんが聞きました。「また海釣りに行きたい？」私とよしあとりき「いや、もういいです。湖か川で。。」ケビンは「うん」
Those are all the fish we caught yesterday.  Daddy asked, "do you wanna go ocean fishing again?"  Joshua, Riki and I said, "No thanks.  We'll rather go lake or river to fish."  Kevin said, "Yeah."

大もの！ Big catch!

やっと雨が止み、今日は海釣りへ行きました。子供も私も初めて。あらしの次の日だったから？ボートがすごく揺れました！私の収穫は可愛い魚２匹と船酔い。
Finally, rain stopped and we went ocean fishing today.  It's the first time for kids and me.  Maybe because it was right after the storm???  The boat rocked a LOT!  I got two cute little fish and seasick. 

一番の大物を釣ったのは、釣りが大好きなケビンの友達。残念ながら今この種類の魚は禁漁の為、家にもって帰れませんでした。。
The one who had a big catch was Kevin's friend who loves fishing.  Too bad that we couldn't take the fish back home because the season for this kind of fish was closed.

雨雨雨.. Rain, RAIN, Rain..

 毎日毎日雨ばっかりで、本当に嫌になっちゃいます。こんな雨の天気はここに引っ越してから初めてです。
Everyday, rain after rain after rain and I don't like it.  We never had such rainy weather since we moved here.

月曜日の朝、ちょっとだけお日様が差した時にとてもきれいな虹ができていました。でもその後すぐに雨が降り出しました。

On Monday morning,  we had a little bit sunshine and it created a beautiful rainbow.  But it started to rain again shortly after the rainbow. 

フルーツ酵母 Yeast from Fruit

ただ今フルーツ酵母とやらを作成中。必要なものは瓶、無農薬の果物、砂糖か蜂蜜そして水。木曜日の朝に始めました。なにしろ今回が初めての試み。発酵がちゃんと進行しているのかどうかもわかりませんが。。ま。。そのうちわかるでしょう。
I am making yeast from fruit(fermenting fruits).  All you need is a jar, organic fruit, sugar or honey and water.  I started this on Thursday morning.  This is my first attempt, so I am not sure things are going as it supposed to.  I will see....

日本からのお客様 A guest from Japan

ケビンの親友が日本から一人でやって来ました。その本人とお母さんの勇気に敬服です。アメリカで初めての食事はIN-N-OUT Burgerのハンバーガーとポテトで〜す！
Kevin's best friend came all the way from Japan by himself.  I admire his and his mom's courage.  His first meal in US is a burger and french fries from IN-N-OUT Burger!

おべんとう Bento Box

日本にいるお友達が、娘さんに作ったお弁当の写真を送ってくれました。のりで名前をかくなんてめちゃいけてます！なんて可愛くて愛情たっぷりなんでしょう。私もこんなお弁当を作ってもらいたいなぁ〜〜！！！家の子供たちは日本の学校に行ってなくて良かった。。私には朝からこんな立派なものを作るなんて無理。。サンドイッチが限度です。

A friend in Japan sent me a picture of a Bento Box (Lunch box) for her daughter.  I really liked the idea of making daughter's name with Nori(dried seaweed sheets) like this!  So cute and sweet!  I wished someone would make me one like this, too!!  I'm glad that my kids are not in Japanese school.  No way  I can get up so early in the morning to make such nice Bento for kids.  Sandwich is all I can do.  

ところで、こちらは我が家のクリスマスツリーです。

BTW, this is the Christmas tree we have in our house.

シフォンケーキ Chiffon Cakes

冷凍のカボチャを買ったら美味しくなかったんです。でも捨てるのはもったいないと思い、カボチャシフォンを作りました。結果、とっても美味しくできました。他にも色々作ってみたくなり、ケビンのお友達の誕生日用にチョコチップシフォンを。これは子供達が大好きでした。
I bought a pack of frozen pumpkin, but it wasn't so good.  I didn't want to throw it away, so I  used it to make pumpkin chiffon cakes.  It turned out it was really good.  Then, I wanted to try making different flavors, so I made a chocolate chip chiffon for Kevin's friend's birthday.  Boys really liked it. 

 こちらはそば茶シフォンとレモンシフォン。そば茶は私は好きだったんですが、子供たちはあまり食べませんでした。レモンシフォンはとてもさっぱりして美味しかったです。子供たちも皆気に入ってました。さて次はどんな種類のを作ろうかしら？トマト味？コーラ味？ところで、数週間前にきなこごまシフォンケーキも焼いたって言いましたっけ？

Those are Soba (buckwheat) tea chiffon and lemon chiffon.  I liked Soba-tea chiffon, but boys didn't eat much.  Lemon flavor was very refreshing and tasted good, too.  Everybody liked it.  Let's see what other flavors I can use..  Tomato?  Coke?  BTW, did I mentioned I made a soybean & sesame powder chiffon few weeks ago.

クリスマスツリー Christmas Tree

今の時期街のあちこちではこうしてクリスマスツリーを売っています。
During this time of the year, there are many places you can go to buy Christmas trees in town.

こちらでは３種類のもみの木が売られていました。森の中に来たみたいですね。

Here, they were selling three different species of trees; Douglas, Grand, and Noble. I felt like we were in a forest.

何年かけて大きくなった木だろう？何本の木がこの季節切り倒されちゃうんだろう？なんて色々頭の中で考えてたら、木たちが可哀相に思えてきました。。。

How old are those trees?  How many tree has been cut down during this season?  Asking myself those questions and I started feeling sorry for them.

ボーイスカウトの子供たちのお手伝いで木は車の上に乗りました。さあ家に帰って飾りをつけましょ〜！
Boy scouts helped putting the tree on top of my friend's car and we are ready to go home to decorate the tree!

こちら2.5mほどの高さの木。完成で〜す。きれ〜〜！！ちなみに今日はお友達のお手伝い。私の家にはツリーも飾りもまだ出してありません。。。
This tree is about 9 ft. tall.  It's all done and looked so pretty!!  BTW, I was helping my friend today.  We got no trees, no decorations in our house yet...

ねぎ Green Onion

これ、両方ネギなんですけど、すごくサイズが違うでしょ。左はお店で買ってきたもの。右は使ったくずを外に植えておいたもの。同じ品種のはずなんですけどね。立派に育ったもんです！こうして使うと、お得ですね。
Those are both green onions, but the size is so different, isn't it!  The left one is the one I just bought from a store.  The right one is from my garden.  I planted the bottom parts of the green onions after I used the top parts and look how well it had grown.   They must be the same species.   This is the way to do it to get most out of what you paid for.

あみ猫 Amineko (=^.^=)

数年前、姪に(=^.^=)を作ってあげました。今は冬、見てください！彼女が (=^.^=)に作ってあげた物。 (=^.^=)にとってもお似合い、そして暖かそう！この (=^.^=)の冬着とても気に入りました！夏になったらもしかして(=^.^=)ちゃん、ビキニを着てたりして？！ (^O^)
I made an (=^.^=) (crocheted cat) for my niece few years ago.  Now it's winter and look what she made for (=^.^=).  Doesn't (=^.^=) look SO cute and warm?!!  I love (=^.^=)'s winter outfit.  Maybe we'll see (=^.^=) in a bikini in summer!!  (^O^)

物々交換 Barter

 お友達が、とお〜〜〜っても美味しいチーズケーキを焼いてくれました。プロ級！
A friend baked a super DELICIOUS cheesecake for me.  It was like a cake made by a professional.

こちらの壁掛けを縫うお手伝いをしてあげたので、そのお礼と言うことでした。このアイディア、なかなか良いなと思いました。技術を使った物々交換ですよね。お互いに得意な事をして人の役に立ち喜ばれる。
I helped her make this wall hanging and the cheesecake was her expression of gratitude for my help.  I liked this idea.  We barter skill for skill.  Each one does what you like to do or what you are good at and benefits and pleases each other. 

答えは。。！ The answer is...!!

ヨダです！このセットは私が台湾でUS７５ドル位で買ったもの。現在は製造中止でコレクターズアイテムとなっています。ちなみにアマゾンでUS３１７ドルで売っています。その頃私がもう１つ買いたかったアイテムがあります。それはレゴ自由の女神。現在それはとても高くなっていて、あ〜〜あのとき買っておけば良かったとちょっと後悔。。。
It's YODA!  I bought this set for US75 dollars in Taiwan.  Now, it's discontinued and a collector's item.  I found one on Amazon for US317 dollars.  There was another item I wanted to buy at that time.  It's a Lego-Statue of Liberty.  Now it's so expensive and I regret not buying it at that time!

何だ？ What's this?

 私が大のレゴ好きだということをご存知の方もいるかと思います。これは私のコレクションの１つ。さて、これが完成すると何になるのでしょう？私の家に来た人は見た事があるかもしれませんね、となると知っているかもしれませんね。。。

Some of you might know that I love Lego.  This is one of my collections.  What is this going to be when it's completed?  If you have been to my house, you might have seen it and know this....

ティーポットカバー Teapot Cover

先週１週間は学校がお休みでした。お休みなのでついついだらだらとしてしまいました。せっかくの１週間で何の達成感も無いのが嫌だったので、昨夜これを 作ってみました。前から作ろうと思っていたティーポットカバーです。なかなか可愛くて使いかっても良いので満足です。明日からはまた学校が始まります。

The last week was school holiday.  Because it was holiday, I got SO lazy,  didn't do much and I wasn't happy about not accomplishing anything.  So, I made this teapot cover last night.  I've been wanting to make this for a while.   This turned out really cute and very functional.  Now I am feeling quite satisfied with my accomplishment and happy.   Schools are starting tomorrow.

エンゼルトランペット Angel's Trumpet

花好きの読者の方から昨日の花の名前を教えていただきました。「エンゼルトランペット」です。なんて可愛らしい名前なんでしょうね。それから、夜になると強い香りを放つんだそうです。夜まで待ってどんな香りかを検証しにいってみたいけど。。。どうしよう。。。泥棒と間違えられる危険が。。。

I received a comment from a reader who loves flowers and learned that the flower I posted yesterday is called "Angel's Trumpet."  What a lovely name!  He mentioned that it releases strong fragrance at night.  I want to actually go there and verify what kind of fragrance it is.  BUT... hmm.....there is a risk that they might think I am a burglar... What shall I do?

It's just so beautiful!!  Finding such a beautiful thing is the joy of taking a walk.

こたつじゃ〜〜！！！ KOTATSU~~!!!

テメキュラもいよいよ寒くなってきたので、こたつをだしました。こたつがあるだけで身体はもちろん、気持ちまでなんだかぬくぬく暖かい。やっぱりいいですね。日本の文化だよね。

It's getting cold in Temecula, so we set up a KOTATSU in our living room.  Those of you who are not Japanese probably got no idea what "KOTATSU" is.  It's a table with an electric heater attached to the underside of the table.  The table is covered with a futon and keeps our legs and body warm.  I love Kotatsu and just having it in the room warms my heart, maybe because it's a part of Japanese culture.

初雪 First Snowfall

先週末は雨でしたが月曜日には太陽と山の雪景色が顔を出しました。今年はちょっと早かったですね。私の過去のブログを見ると、去年は１２月１０日。一昨年は１２月２１日。地球温暖化じゃなくて寒冷化じゃないですか？！

Last weekend was rain, but the sun came out on Monday and so does the snow capped mountain.  It came a bit early this year.  Looking at my previous posts,  it came on Dec. 10 last year and Dec. 21 the year before that.   Maybe the earth is not warming, but cooling!?

サボテンの実 Cactus Fruit

こちら、サボテンの実。初めて買って食べてみました。


This is a cactus fruit.  I bought it and tried it for the first time.

中はこんなかんじで、小さな種みたいなものが沢山ありました。どんな味と言ったら良いのでしょうね。甘くてさっぱりしていて、台湾で沢山食べたドラゴンフルーツを思い出しました。

Inside looks like this.  There are many tiny seeds.  Its taste is hard to describe...  It was sweet and refreshing.  It reminded me of dragon fruits we had in Taiwan.
